# - Degree of substitution is interpreted through international standard calculations from nitrogen measurement. Nitrogen is determined by standard testing method.
Our product has two distinct and characteristic advantages over others:
Cationic starch is primarily recommended to be used in paper industry as a wet-end additive for internal sizing to enhance paper strength, fines and retention over wire mesh, drainage and pulp loss recovery.
In the manufacturing process of cationic starch, quaternary ammonium salt is used, which gives positive charge to the starch particles. This is measured by the degree of substitution interpreted through standard international calculations from nitrogen content. Positive charges in the cationic starch molecules attract/bring closer the negatively charged fiber through electro static power. As a result, the size of the fibers improves and cannot pass through the wire mesh being prevented from drain with waste water also. It minimizes the COD and BOD load of the effluent.
It is the high pasty nature of the starch which binds the fibers which are brought closer due to positive charge of the starch as discussed above. During wet-end addition, normally the percentage of cooked starch slurry mixed with the paper pulp is lesser and concentration may not be more than 1%. In that case only when a starch with very high pasty nature is used, it would give the desired performance.
